Back to Work Motion Design Case Study

Nike — Move

A self-initiated motion design piece inspired by performance-driven brand storytelling. The project explores how lighting, texture, pacing, and movement can transform a simple product-focused concept into a more energetic and emotionally engaging visual experience.

Final motion piece exploring energy, movement, and visual impact through pacing, light, and texture.

The concept

The idea behind this piece was to create a short, high-impact motion study around movement and performance. Instead of showing the full body or building a complex scene, the focus is placed on the shoes, the rhythm of running, and the feeling of momentum.

The visual direction keeps the environment simple so the motion, lighting, and texture can carry the story. This allowed the piece to feel focused, bold, and direct — closer to a campaign-style brand moment than a purely decorative animation.

Creative direction

Energy

The motion is designed to feel fast, confident, and active, using pacing and transitions to create momentum.

Contrast

Lighting and texture are used to create impact, helping the product stand out against a simple visual environment.

Rhythm

The animation is synced with the music, using timing and cuts to make the visuals feel more intentional and immersive.

Process

The process started with a simple movement idea: a close-up running shot focused on the shoes. From there, I explored framing, camera distance, visual style, and background texture to find a direction that felt dynamic without becoming visually overloaded.

Throughout the piece, I tested how small creative decisions — such as lateral camera framing, lighting intensity, texture movement, and pacing — could change the overall feeling of the animation.

What I explored

  • Close-up product-focused motion
  • Lateral running composition
  • Lighting and contrast for stronger visual impact
  • Background texture movement
  • Music synchronisation
  • Campaign-style pacing and transitions

What I learned

This study helped me better understand how motion design can communicate energy and emotion with very few elements. By simplifying the scene and focusing on movement, timing, and lighting, the piece became more direct and visually stronger.

It also reinforced how important sound sync is in motion design. When the animation responds to the music, the final result feels more intentional, polished, and engaging.

Outcome

Nike — Move became a focused motion design experiment that allowed me to practise cinematic pacing, visual rhythm, and brand-inspired storytelling. It sits between motion branding and product advertising, showing how movement can elevate a simple product idea into a stronger visual narrative.
